...EXCEPT FOR THE POLAR BEARS...
After our brief stint outside in the mountains we decided to visit the anchorage zoo in order to see a polar bear. Utilizing student discounts (yeah we still look like students!) we jumped into the zoo experience. There were tons of animals in the zoo (mind you all ones which can survive outside in more typical alaskan temperatures) and we took pictures of them all--in multiples! We'll spare you all of them, but the highlights are the polar bear and the camel. After the zoo we headed from anchorage to Eagle River, Jenny's hometown! We met the Elledge's (jenny has two little sisters and a younger bro), enjoyed some snacks and story time. We learned about the types of alakan crafts, like ice candle holders, and Dara got to watch the funniest bungee jumping video of ALL time!
Headed out from Eagle River we showered quickly and took off for dinner at the Glacier Brewhouse. I tried Alaskan king crab (which incidently tastes like lobster) and beer battered halibut. The food was phenomenal, and we left for the bars pretty stuffed! Our first alaskan bar was F street where we were joined by Terry, Jen's man, and her male friends. The bar was EXACTLY like finns, and dara and i got a kick out of trying to assign all the characters of alaska to ones from home! I also met two Aussies and enjoyed rousing conversation about Australian beer, music, and locations. From F street we took off for the world famous COOTS bar. COOTS was impressive as establishments go. I had no idea so many people go out--enough to make a line!! That's more "hopping" than Olympia. Coots was a blast from the ice bar, to the bird-house, to the dance rooms, to the live-music. We passed out late Saturday night and got up with the sun again ;) After bagels and a brief stint of driving jenny's car (which has studded tires and REALLY do grip on ice!) we took off for the airport. The shortest trip to Alaska came to an end. All around impressed by anchorage and looking forward to a summertime visit to go fishing and play frisbee at 1am!
